Mod 3 Lesson Plan 2: Scientific Language (first posted, though--don't ask)

This is my lesson plan on Scientific Language. I built a sort of mini-sequence with this whole thing that I thought was kind of neat. I re-taught Phases and modes, first so that we could all have our metacognitive hats on (ugh hate that phrase). Then, because we had been 'learning how to think like scientists', we needed to learn how to 'talk like scientists'. So, I moved into the language of scientists lesson. I did a quick intro (like three days, tops) on Continental Drift theory and then just had them sort of talk about/list different scientific theories and laws that they've heard or that they know. Then, they had to rate theories and laws on a "fact or guess" scale, so I could get a rough look at the misconceptions in the room. After that, we spent like 2 days on the theories and laws packet. *shrug* i think it worked out pretty well. The kids are really interested in the difference, which really shocked me.

This sounds great - I just wish I had the time to devote to this. How did you monitor/assess their discussions, ratings, progress throughout the process?

I recorded what they said on the board so that we had a visual (actually I had another student do it, since they've all decided that they can't read my writing). That really freed me up to facilitate the discussion without having to focus on actually 'doing' something. I wandered the room and 'keyed in to their conversations when they were working in pairs. After that, it's their examples and when we talked about their answers from the packet.
