Malassezia is Widespread, Highly Generalist, and Has Undescribed Diversity in Our Oceans

Student Presenter: Ronja Steinbach
Mentors:Dr. Anthony Amend and Dr. Fouad El Baidouri
Description: This project examines the diversity, specificity, and biogeographical distribution of marine Malassezia, a genus of fungus. We used samples from Waimea Bay, Oʻahu, collected as part of the C-MĀIKI microbiome project in addition to samples from collaborators in Washington state, and Woods Hole, Massachusetts. We did nested polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) to amplify around 500 base pairs of the 28S rDNA, did MiSeq high throughput sequencing and used those results to construct a new phylogeny examining the diversity within this genus, and then performing statistical analyses in R, to answer our other questions.
