Medical Student Mentorship Program

Founded in 2002, the Medical Student Mentorship Program (MSMP) is a student-run organization that pairs current medical students John A. Burns School of Medicine with undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in medicine.

Through these pairings, our goal is to help foster relationships between undergraduates and medical students and faculty. Over the years, we have paired more than 600 mentees with medical student mentors via an extensive matching process. Mentor-mentee pairs contact each other regularly and participate in a variety of activities throughout the year.

Pre-Medical Association at the University of Hawaii at Manoa

The Pre-Medical Association (PMA) is the largest pre-health organization at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. PMA strives to expose students to the medical field that they plan to work in, and foster collegiality among peers with similar interests by providing its members with numerous networking and service opportunities. As a member of PMA, a student has access to valuable resources that may not be available to them as individuals. The Pre-Medical Association goals:

Provide its members with events and activities related to community service, medical education, and socials
Introduce members to professionals in the healthcare community
Expose members to underserved areas, academic institutions, and organizations related to healthcare
Help members meet other students with similar interests and goals

Pre-Physician Assistant Association

The Pre-Physician Assistant Association at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa invites all students who are interested in the Physician Assistant profession. Members will learn about the history and purpose of the profession and the application process for Physician Assistant programs.

Additionally, this organization is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the medical field through community services and medical events and will allow aspiring PAs to meet and shadow Physician Assistants. Students will develop a holistic understanding of the Physician Assistant profession and connect with other students with similar aspirations and career goals.

Pre-Pharmacy Association

Pre-Health Career Corps

The Hawai‘i Pre-Health Career Corps (PHCC) is a program of the Hawai’i / Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center located at U.H.’s John A. Burns School of Medicine. The Hawaii Pre-Health Career Corps is a free year-round program for high school and college students who are interested in pursuing careers in health.

PHCC’s purpose is to:

Increase awareness about health careers
Provide mentoring
Provide shadowing and research experiences
Provide campus exposure to health careers

Through their years in the Corps, students are given progressive responsibility and serve as mentors to incoming members, thus providing a group support system for students interested in pursuing health careers.

Volunteers for Intercultural and Definitive Adventures (VIDA) at UHM

VIDA is a non-profit organization that focuses on providing free medical, dental, and veterinary healthcare to rural communities in Central America. The UHM chapter completed the first trip to Costa Rica over spring break (Mar. 18 – 31, 2015). The students worked with talented doctors and translators to help diagnose and/or treat patients as well as provide spay/neuter clinics.

Past PRE-MED, PRE-DENTAL, and PRE-VET students from the Spring Break 2016 group have traveled to Costa Rica and students from the Summer 2016 group have traveled to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.

HOSA at UH Manoa

Establishing and reviving the HOSA - Future Health Professionals chapter at UH Mānoa. Providing pre-health related opportunities to members of the chapter, such as shadowing, volunteering, and skill-based workshops. Additionally coaching and assisting peers for competing in HOSA - FHP health competitions. Open to all majors and scholars who have an interest in health.

NMDP/Be The Match Chapter

As the NMDP Chapter at UH Mānoa, we believe each of us can make a significant impact in the fight against blood cancers and disorders. As a Campus Chapter under the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP℠), we aim to grow the marrow donor registry and expand access to life-saving treatments. Members of our chapter have the opportunity to interact with others who share a passion for this cause and earn non-clinical volunteering (service) hours, while making a tangible difference. The Molecular Cell Biology Club at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa serves to foster student interest in the field of cell biology, promote extra-curricular educational opportunities, and support student interactions with peers and professionals who have similar interests.

Student Nurses' Association

1. SNA members will work to create a positive, professional atmosphere, which will focus on mentorship, leadership, and collaboration.

2. To promote open communication and collaboration throughout the student body, faculty, and administration of the nursing program.

3. To select students as representatives to participate on school committees in order to share responsibility and accountability for governance within the nursing program.

4. SNA officers and class representatives will act as advocates for nursing students by effectively articulating the collective concerns of the student body through the established channels of communication at the Department of Nursing.

5. To foster and develop mentoring relationships among students by assisting new students in the school orientation program and offering ongoing assistance on a formal and/or informal basis.

6. To promote participation in all SNA/class activities and opportunities to develop leadership skills through various volunteer, social, educational, and fundraising activities.

7. To represent the students of the Department of Nursing (DON) in the pursuit of excellence in educational training toward competent, professional care and practice.

8. To facilitate student knowledge of and participation in professional nursing organizations.

9. To assist in increased public understanding of the role of the student and professional nurse beyond the clinical setting.

10. To seek and provide service opportunities for students that meet the health care needs and wellbeing of community members regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, physical abilities, political beliefs, religious beliefs, nationality, or other ideologies.
