FAQS

Do I need to be a college student?

Yes. All of our students must be full time college students for a minimum of three years. However, the program is open to both undergrads and graduate students.

What is my weekly commitment to AFROTC?

While in Air Force ROTC, you will be required to attend three Professional Military Training sessions per week: Physical Training twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 0600 to 0700 and Leadership Laboratory on Fridays from 0645 to 0900. Cadets are also required to take their assigned Aerospace Studies Courses, which have increasing time commitments as Cadets progress through the program towards commissioning. In addition to the required time commitments, Cadets will need to dedicate a portion of their free time to physical fitness, extracurriculars, team building, and professional development.

How many years do I have to participate in AFROTC in order to earn a commission in the Air Force or Space Force?

Air Force ROTC is designed to be a four-year program. For cadets with prior military experience, undergraduate degree completion, or who have completed their freshman year of their undergraduate degree, we do offer a truncated three-year program. Known as the AS250 Program, this route is not recommended for most cadets, and in all cases requires prior Detachment Commander approval to participate in.

How do I sign up/apply?

Getting started is easy. All you have to do is register for AS 101 (Fall) or 102 (Spring) and the corequisite Leadership Laboratory AS101L (Fall) or AS102L (Spring). Cadets who have been approved for the AS250 Program should register for AS101, AS201, and AS251L. The AS250 program is only offered to Cadets starting in the Fall Semester. Cadets in the UH System (Manoa, UHWO, Hawai’i Community Colleges) will have their contact information automatically pulled. Students coming from other colleges or universities should email us once they have registered for class to ensure proper on-boarding. ALL students should RSVP for New Student Orientation.

What degrees are required to commission?

Cadets in AFROTC can pursue any course of study they desire. Most Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC) do not require specific fields of study. However, some AFSC fields such as: Engineering, Civil Engineering, Medical, and JAG do have specific degree requirements. Other AFSCs, such as Contracting, Acquisitions, and Finance have fields of study recommendations. Fields such as Pilot, Air Battle Manager, Combat Systems Officer, Maintenance, and Security Forces do not have any degree requirements.

I don’t meet the height and weight requirements, can I still participate?

Yes, however Cadets will be required to meet height and weight and/or Body Mass Index requirements prior to Field Training and Commissioning.

If am not physically fit, can I still sign up?

The U.S. Military and the U.S. Department of the Air Force value fitness and a healthy lifestyle. At Detachment 175, we pride ourselves on being physically fit and active. If you do not come from an athletic background, we encourage you to at least familiarize yourself with and attempt our Physical Fitness Assessment. Cadets who cannot pass the PFA are subject to dismissal from Air Force ROTC.
