The Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health Department of Social Work is proud to offer our undergraduate (BSW) and graduate (MSW) degrees via distance learning technology statewide. 


 

Distance Education Program Options

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program, Distance Education (DE) Option

Our BSW program is available on a part-time or full-time schedule to all state of Hawaiʻi students as well as people who reside in CNMI, American Samoa, Palau, FSM, and the Marshall Islands who have completed their General Education Core Requirements. Students complete the program while remaining in their home community (Hawaiʻi, Molokaʻi, Kauaʻi, Maui, Lanaʻi, or Oʻahu), CNMI, American Samoa, Palau, FSM and the Marshall Islands. Most classes are delivered asynchronously online and in a condensed 5-week format while the Field Education requirements are fulfilled in community agencies, under the supervision of certified social workers.

Master of Social Work (MSW) Program, Distance Education (DE) Option

Since 1988 the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health has provided opportunities for residents on our neighbor islands (Hawaii Island, Kauai, Lanai, Maui, Molokai) to complete graduate degrees in social work. In 2007, the program was switched from a traveling degree program to a distance education technology-mediated degree and has since graduated over 250 students. The DE Options (57 credit and advanced standing-30 credit programs) of the MSW Program are available to students who reside in Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, CNMI (Saipan, Tinian, Rota), Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, and Republic of the Marshall Islands.

It is essential for students enrolled in the Distance Education options of our BSW and MSW Programs to have a reliable computer and high speed access to the internet.
