The current Mānoa strategic plan, Defining Our Destiny, 2002–2010 Strategic Plan, was created through a campus-wide effort and approved by the Board of Regents in 2002. In 2008, a review led to Defining Our Destiny - Continuing the Committment examining progress and benchmarks.

In Spring 2010 Mānoa began a process to update Defining Our Destiny and to develop a 2011–2015 Strategic Plan. A Strategic Plan Working Group (SPWG) was formed to collect data, conduct focus groups, and coordinate writing teams. The SPWG web site provides information on timelines and activities involved in the planning process.

A draft of Achieving Our Destiny, the University of Hawaʻii at Mānoa 2011–2015 Strategic Plan is now posted. The updated plan includes revised mission and vision statements for the campus, as well as a timeline and process for implementation.

Our Mission

As a land, sea, and space grant university, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is dedicated not only to academic and research excellence but also to serving with aloha the local, national, and international communities that surround us. Taking as its historic trust the Native Hawaiian values embedded in the concepts of kuleana, ʻohana, and ahupuaʻa that serve to remind us of our responsibilities to family, community, and the environment, Mānoa’s hallmark is a culture of community engagement that extends far beyond the classroom to bridge theory and practice, fostering creative and critical thinking, and promoting students’ intellectual growth and success as contributing members of society.

Central to this mission is faculty dedication to a fertile, engaged, and ethical learning environment characterized by a free exchange of ideas, shared intellectual resources, cutting edge scholarship, and high academic expectations. With its unique geographic location bridging East and West, Mānoa serves as a portal to an exceptional educational experience while striving to improve quality of life in the region through collaborative partnerships that support innovations in education, health care, social development, culture and arts, earth, space, and ocean sciences, sustainable land management, and technological advancement.

Our Vision

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will gain international recognition as among the nation’s leading land, sea, and space grant universities. Grounded in the traditional values of our host culture, we strive for excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, while promoting environmental sustainability and human justice.
