He earned his B.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in history at the University of Pennsylvania. Rediker is also an award-winning author with works including The Slave Ship: A Human History and Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Merchant Seamen, Pirates, and the Anglo-American Maritime World, 1700–1750.Rediker was named the 2019 Dan & Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals.
