Hawai‘i Celebrates Sakada Day at the Hawaiʻi Plantation Village
Student projects reflect on the Filipino workers who built Hawai‘i’s legacy
WAIPAHU, HI – The Philippine Celebrations Coordinating Committee of Hawai‘i, in collaboration with the Filipino Curriculum Project and the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa’s Center for Philippine Studies, proudly invites the community to the Sakada Day Celebration on Saturday,
December 13, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hawai‘i Plantation Village.
This exciting event honors the resilience, contributions, and cultural impact of Hawai‘i’s Sakadas– the Filipino migrant plantation workers whose enduring legacy continues to shape the Filipino American experience today.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
Attendees will enjoy a vibrant day that educates audiences about Sakadas, plantation history and Filipino identity.
(NEW) Fashion Show – Marvel at student-designed clothing and accessories featuring upcycled materials, Palaka prints and Philippine weaving.
Interactive Booths – Explore historical and cultural exhibits featuring tabletop presentations, artwork, documentaries, games, and parol-making by students and community groups.
Live Performances – Celebrate Filipino culture through music and dance.
Food Trucks – Savor traditional and contemporary Filipino cuisine.
Back from a successful inaugural year, student participation in the showcase has doubled. Farrington High School Social Studies Teacher Michelle Aquino explained the event’s importance, saying, “Sakada Day allows the youth to showcase their learning about the Filipinos and other cultures that worked on Hawaiʻi plantations, as well as connect students with the greater history and experiences of diasporic Filipino Communities. Students get a renewed appreciation of their heritage and engage them to connect with their community.”
This year’s theme – based on the Filipino American National Historical Society’s (FANHS) select theme – “Migration and Movement” will highlight work from students who are part of the Filipino social studies and language courses in several Hawaiʻi high schools: Farrington, Waipahu, Dreamhouse ‘Ewa Beach Charter, Maryknoll, Campbell, Waianae, Kulanihakoʻi, and Lanai High Schools.
Admission to the Hawaiʻi Plantation Village will be free on that day and attendees will be able to access all the various exhibits.
