Welcome!
The Philippine Celebrations Coordinating Committee of Hawai‘i, the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Center for Philippine Studies and Filipino Curriculum Project proudly invite the community to the Sakada Day Celebration 2025.
This annual gathering honors the resilience, contributions, and cultural legacy of Hawai‘i’s Filipino Sakadas — migrant plantation workers whose hard work, courage, and spirit continue to shape the Filipino American experience today.

About the Sakadas
The Sakadas were courageous Filipino laborers who arrived in Hawaii beginning in 1906, driven by the hope for a better life for themselves and their families. Through hard work and resilience, they contributed immensely to Hawaii’s plantation economy and laid the foundation for the vibrant Filipino community we celebrate today. Recognizing their sacrifices and enduring legacy, Governor David Ige signed into law in 2015 a bill declaring December 20 as Sakada Day in Hawaii. This day honors their extraordinary journey. May the Sakada legacy inspire generations to dream boldly and persevere, while rooted in the pride of their ethnic identity.
