The first student recipient of the Center’s scholarship through its endowments is Anthony Medrano, who was then taking his MA in Political Science at UH. (He also pursued another MA degree later, this time in Asian Studies, at UH.) He was awarded the Yuchengco Endowment for Philippine Studies in Summer 2003 to enable him to conduct fieldwork in the Philippines to gather data for his MA thesis and Certificate on Philippine Studies. He focused on the San Roque Multipurpose Project (SRMP) in Nothern Luzon.
Anthony obtained his BA in Political Science in Global Studies from Humboldt University in Arcata, California in 2000. He served as a research assistant and volunteer for the Globalization Research Center’s monthly video magazine. He was also a volunteer for the Asia Pacific Parliamentarian Forum and Project Coordinator/Teacher for the Americorps VISTA, Jefferson High School from 2000-2001.
Anthony Medrano has since earned his PhD degree in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, He is now an Assistant Professor in Social Sciences (Environmental Studies) at the National University of Singapore Presidential Young Professor of Environmental Studies at Yale-NUS College.
