Lecture – Man in the Middle: Hermenegildo Cruz, The Filipino Workers, and the Ruling Classes, by Veronica Alporha
Join us in this lecture on Hermenegildo Cruz, a labor leader and a revolutionary. He worked with native politicians in the independence campaign, but was appointed as Director of the Bureau of Labor. This put him in a conflicting position as an advocate of the working class, a loyal associate of the conservative nationalist elite, and a civil servant within the US colonial government. Presented by Veronica Alporha, a PhD in History student and recipient of the Belinda Aquino International Philippine Studies Endowment, will examine the tension that characterized Cruz’s ambiguous place.
Date and Venue: April 17, 2026, 11:30 am-1:30 pm, Moore Hall 319 (Tokioka Room).
