Dr. Aurelio Agcaoili speaks about Language Justice at the 2026 Philippine Studies Conference, UK

Dr. Aurelio Agcaoili will present a paper entitled “Philippine Languages, Epistemic Violence, and Archipelagic Knowledge System: The Case of Language Justice” in Panel 1 of the conference held at SOAS, University of London in August 2026.

This paper argues that in an archipelagic country like the Philippines, questions of language, culture, and education must be grounded in a post-decolonial framework that foregrounds archipelagic epistemology. So long as the state sponsors the production and reproduction of epistemic violence, the pursuit of freedom remains structurally incomplete.

Aurelio S. Agcaoili, PhD, serves as Chair of the Department of Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. A recipient of the United States Fulbright Scholarship, he taught and conducted field research in the Philippines. He writes and publishes in three languages.
