Haruka Kei Waseda, a Graduate student in Asian Studies, will talk about her research on the Nikkeijin (Japanese nationals who migrated abroad or their descendants), Japanese people who moved to the Philippines in the early 1900s. Many of their descendants are still there, mostly in Davao, while some have remained in Baguio and surrounding areas like the Ilocos region. Haruka asks: “Why do different Philippine Nikkeijin from Baguio develop different views towards Japan?” “What factors shape their perspectives, and how do they influence the mobility of Philippine Nikkeijin?
