It is extremely important to carefully mentor and evaluate faculty in the years prior to their application for tenure. This is an opportunity for departments to assess and guide faculty in their career. Contract renewals are governed by Article XII, Section E of the UH-UHPA collective bargaining agreement. For Faculty Members at Rank 2 or 3, contracts shall be for two years and may be followed by one-year contracts. Faculty at all other ranks who are to be reappointed shall be given one-year contracts. Additional contract renewals shall be for on-year terms not to exceed seven years of full-time probationary service. Recommendations for renewal shall require that the faculty’s performance has been assessed for strengths and weaknesses and has been rated as satisfactory, that there is continuing need for the faculty’s services at the University, and that the faculty has made the professional improvement or has demonstrated the professional and personal qualities needed by the Department.
