Introduction to Okinawan Dance

Experience Okinawan culture through dance in this introductory class. Participants will learn selected dances from the Okinawan classical & folk traditions. No experience necessary & no performance required. Bring tabi or socks to class.

Instructor: Yukie Shiroma has an MFA in dance from UH. For over 30 years, Shiroma has studied Okinawan classical dance & theatre with Master Instructor, Cheryl Yoshie Nakasone, director of Jimpu Kai USA Kin Ryosho Ryukyu Geino Kenkyusho.

Balinese gamelan music is a unique tradition that includes metallophones (bronze-keyed with bamboo resonators) of various registers, bronze potted kettle instruments, hanging gongs, double-headed drums, and bamboo flutes. In Bali, gamelan music is performed in many various performance contexts ranging from entertainment to ceremonial or ritual purposes. The musical ensemble promotes a sense of belonging and community as all participants work together toward a common, unified goal. In performing and learning Balinese gamelan music people of various musical experience and ability can come together in one ensemble to create beautiful music. This course focuses on practical performance of Balinese music including traditional music, contemporary compositions, and/or music that accompanies Balinese dance repertoire. All music is learned by ear through following/mirroring the instructors and repetition without the use of musical notation.

*Participants in this course will have the opportunity to perform in gamelan concert at UHM

In this course new students will learn the basic underlying concepts of Balinese gamelan including gong cycle patterns, interlocking melodic motifs, basic damping technique, and how to follow musical cues from the lead drummer. The students will learn how to play multiple instruments in the ensemble in order to understand the interrelationship between the various instruments. Experienced students will have an opportunity to review basic musical concepts, refine their technique, and learn new instruments.

Balinese dances range from traditional ritual-based dances to court-based classical dances to contemporary dances in the dynamic kebyar style. Stock character types depicted in Balinese dance range on a continuum from the refined female to the strong male to the unrefined demon-ogres; dances further range from the divine to animals. In this course participants will learn the basics of Balinese dance including basic body postures, basic walks, basic movement sequences and gestures, and seledet (signature flickering eye movement of Balinese dance). In this course the participants will focus on learning and refine one dance choreography from the traditional Balinese dance repertory.

Keiki and Family Balinese Music and Dance

In this course the children and families will learn about Balinese arts and culture through experiential learning. The participants will learn Balinese music and dance in the traditional manner that children in Bali learn the performing arts. The children learn both music and dance in order to appreciate how the two work together. The children will be encouraged in a very positive and supportive learning environment and they will learn how to provide moral support to their fellow classmates as they work together to create beautiful music and dances. Parents and/or guardians are encouraged to participate in the class along with the children.

*All participants participate in both music and dance classes, nurtures an experiential understanding of the integral relationship between Balinese music & dance
