About the 2019 Artists

ASK Dance Company champions a Malaysian identity through traditional and contemporary dance. The company continues to be a unique, creative force representing Malaysia as they have gone on to win numerous awards and tour throughout Asia and Europe.

Dancers of Damelahamid is an aboriginal group from the northwest coast of British Columbia. Through dramatic dance, captivating narrative, intricately carved masks and elaborate regalia, the dancers transform time and space, bridging the ancient with a living tradition.

Hālau Hula Ka No‘eau has built its reputation on the philosophy and creed that the “Art of Hula” expresses all we see, hear, smell, taste, touch and feel. The hālau is guided by the belief that the best foundation in creating something new is a thorough understanding of the past.

Kikunobu Dance Company was founded by Gertrude Tsutsumi, who is one the premier nihon buyo (Japanese classical dance) artists in Hawai`i.  In 2015, Tsutsumi was  named as a National Heritage Fellow, the nation’s highest award for folk and traditional arts.
