As a symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shurijo Castle has long stood as the heart of Okinawan Identity. However, its history has been marked by both glory and profound challenges, including the devastating 2019 fire.
In this session, Professor Mori will provide an overview of the castle’s historical significance and the meticulous efforts currently underway to restore its former glory. The talk will highlight the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and the latest research findings, as well as the unique challenges and innovations defining the “Reiwa Reconstruction.”
