Aloha mai kākou,

This anahulu’s ʻōlelo noʻeau is one that has stuck with me since attending a recent meeting. When we were prompted to share a story, song, or ʻōlelo noʻeau that inspires us to ʻonipaʻa, Kumu Taupōuri Tangarō offered: “E Kiʻi ka Hoe, Lau Hoe, Lau Hoe. Time to take up the paddle, myriad hoe paddling in unison.”

As we reflected together in the meeting, when times are difficult, we can (re)turn to the strength found in the wisdom of our kūpuna, and these words have the power to bring us together and inspire action. During my classes this week, I’ve been thinking through this ʻōlelo noʻeau and how it applies to my kuleana as a graduate student to take up not a paddle but instead a pen.

Anahulu Reflection:

In what other ways might this ʻōlelo noʻeau inspire you to take action through your paddle or pen of choice?
