Anahulu Hoʻonui 8/23 – 9/1/2025

Aloha kākou, 

As we continue to make our way reading through versions of the moʻolelo found within the article “Kahi I Loaa Mai Ai Ka Inoa Kapunahou,” we will now follow the travels of the twins Kauawaahila and Kauakiowao as they move around the area of Mānoa in order to elude capture from their step mother. Some of the places they visit include the peak of Kōnāhuanui and the hill called Kūkaʻōʻō: 

“No ka nui maoli o ka hana ino o ko laua makuahine kolea, ua holo okoa aku la kela mau keiki mahoe no Konahuanui. Eia nae ua loaa hou laua ia Hawea ma ke anuenue ahiki i ko laua loaa ana, no ka mea e ku mau ana ke anuenue ame ka ua koko, ma ko laua wahi e noho ai. 

“Kauoha aku la o Hawea ia laua e hoi no Kaala, eia nae holo aku la laua a pee iloko o kekahi mau ana liilii ma ka aoao o ka puu i kapaia o Kukaoo, he wahi i uhiia ae oluna o ka piko e na heiau a ka menehune. 

“Ma keia wahi laua i noho ai no kekahi manawa, me ke kanu ana i ka uala; aka nae, loaa hou no laua ia Hawea, a kipaku no no ia laua.” 

Recently, as I was walking near the location of UH Press and the Institute for Astronomy, I looked up to the hill of Waʻahila, pictured above. Our Hawaiʻi Hall office view is mostly of the makai (sea-side) portion of Waʻahila where the burn line indicates previous brushfires (mahalo for all the memories shared with us Kumu Craig Howes!). This different point of view was a fresh perspective that allowed me to renew my appreciation for this place.
