UHM NH Updates: Anahulu Hoʻonui, ʻAukake 2026 Pōʻakolu 8/12 - Pōʻalima 8/21/2026

ʻO Hale Hawaiʻi me nā pāma e kū nei. Hawaiʻi Hall with palms growing.

Aloha e nā hoa,

No ka hoʻomaka ʻana o kēia kau hāʻule lau kākou e heluhelu aʻe ana i ka puke ʻo Building A Rainbow. Eia kekahi ʻāpana o ka mokuna e pili ana no Hale Hawaiʻi a me ka inoa mua o ua hale nei.

The building was called the “Main Building” for ten years, until March 17, 1922, when the Regents officially renamed it “Hawaiian Hall.” Completed in 1912, it initially housed most of the entire College’s early operations: administration, library, animal husbandry laboratory, classrooms, art studio, and athletic locker room. When books from the library in the old Maertens’ house on the Young Street campus were moved into their new quarters in Hawaiʻi Hall in 1912, they were put through windows since the front of the building was newly filled in and too soft to allow trucks to run over it. The library was located on the mauka side of the first floor.

English Description:
For the start of the fall semester we’ll continue reading the book Building A Rainbow. Here is a selection from the chapter about Hawaiʻi Hall as well as the first name of this building.

He Noʻonoʻo No Kēia Anahulu:

Na wai i noho ma mua ma ka wahi o kou hale a i ʻole o kou keʻena e hana ana? He aha ka inoa o kou hale nei i ka wa mā mua? Who were the people before you who inhabited your work building or office? What are the previous names of your building?
