Aloha e nā makamaka, 

As the Kū moons have brought the energy to get lots of work done this weekend, so too does this continuation of our moʻolelo “Kahi I Loaʻa Mai Ai Ka Inoa Kapunahou” remind us that all the hard work will soon pay off! 

“I ka pau ana o kela mau hana hoomanao, o ka hele aku la no ia o Mukaka no kahi e ku ana o ke kumu lauhala, ua hele no hoi kona mau aa loloa a ku i ka lepo; mamuli o ka hui pu ana mai o kona mau hoa me ia, ua hukiia ae la ke kumu puhala a hemo me na aa ame na mea apau, a ia wa i puapuaʻi ae ai ka waipuna, mailoko ae o ka honua. Me ka hauoli nui, ua hoomaka ae la na kanaka e kahea: ‘Kapuna hou! Kapuna hou!’

“Elieli iho la o Mukaka ahiki i ka loaa ana o kekahi wahi hohonu. Malalo mai o kela wahi i hanaia ai he lokoiʻa, me ka loaa pu o ka wai e hookahekahe ai iloko o na loʻi kalo. Aole he mau mea e ae i oi aku ka hauoli, like me Kealoha ame kana kane, no ka mea aole laua e hele hou ana i kahi loihi, e kii ai i wai; aka ua noho laua e hauoli i na pomaikai o ka laua mau loʻi kalo ame ka lokoiʻa.

“Maluna o ke sila o ke Kula o Punahou, e ike no kakou i ke kumu lauhala, e pahola ana kona mau lau, he kumu hoohalike, no ka waipuna o ka naauao.”

After Mukaka and Kealoha find the spring of freshwater beneath the roots of the kumu pūhala, the writer of this moʻolelo explains the significance of the seal of the school of Punahou. Within the lines of this (hi)story is the reminder that this ʻāina was once known for flowing waters that fed the loʻi kalo and loko iʻa of the people.
