Anahulu Hoʻonui 11/20 – 11/29/2025

Aloha mai kākou, 

As we continue to read through our moʻolelo found in “Kahi I Loaa Mai Ai Ka Inoa Kapunahou,” there are some connections that I am continuing to uncover for myself, especially during my morning and afternoon walks around campus. With the shifting seasons, I have also been adjusting my walking routes to enjoy (and sometimes find shelter from) the rains in different ways, which includes tuning into the patterns and routes of the rains themselves in different places. 

“Nonoi aku la ke keiki i ke akua moo, e kokua mai iaia me ka wehe ana ae i mana wai, ahiki malalo mai o kona wahi e noho ana ame kona kaikuahine. Ua haawi mai la ke akua wai i kona ae e kokua, me ka hoohiki pu ana mai, a mahele i ka wai o kahi e pili kokoke mai ana, oia ka mapuna Wailele, e holo aku ia ma ka mana wai a ke keiki i makemake ai, ma ia ano, e mau loa ai ka wai i na wa apau. 

Ia wa i hele aku ai kela keiki i ka lokowai o Kanawai, a hoomaka aku la e luu iloko, ia wa i wehe ae ai ke akua moo i kekahi mana wai malalo o ka honua. Iloko o ka manawa pokole, aia oia ke au la iloko o ka wai malalo ae o ka honua, a oili ae la oia ma kahi e ikeia nei i keia manawa o ka Waipuna o Punahou.”

This passage perhaps speaks to the connection among fresh water springs mentioned in this narrative of the twins Kauawaahila and Kauakiowao. The springs of Wailele and Punahou are both located here in Mānoa near Kānewai, and the subterranean relationship of these waters is revealed through the landscape of ʻāina as described in this moʻolelo. Additionally, this moʻolelo encourages us to think about the relationship that the winds and the rains have with the movement and passage of water in different forms, like the rainbows that have been frequenting our campus.
