UHM NH Updates: Anahulu Hoʻēmi, Nowemapa 2025 Tuesday 11/11 - Wednesday 11/19/2025

Some of the new plants around the grounds of Hawaiʻi Hall planted during Arbor Day 2025.

Aloha e nā hoa,

Last Friday was Arbor Day in Hawaiʻi! Our team was able to check out the festivities during our annual campus event, and we also had the opportunity to plant some mea kanu on the grounds of Hawaiʻi Hall. Among the famous palms, we planted mea kanu such as the ʻukiʻuki in the foreground, some medium-sized ʻaʻaliʻi next to the bird-of-paradise, and even another special surprise plant, if you can tell! They are flourishing in the recent rains that accompany Arbor Day, so don’t be shy to say hello and give these mea kanu a compliment if you’re walking through the area.

Curious about the trees and plants you see around campus? Visit the Campus Arboretum website to check out the plant finder map!

Anahulu Reflection:

These plants now bring me a little closer and deeper in pilina with this area of campus and with the ʻili ʻāina of Pilipili. They bring me joy as I walk to and from work, knowing that they are growing with all the good intentions and laughter from the day that we spent together planting.

How else might the act of planting make an impact on your daily lives and the ways that you interact with our environments?
