Anahulu Hoʻēmi 10/12 – 10/22/2025

UHM NH Updates: Anahulu Hoʻēmi, ʻOkakopa 2025 Sunday 10/12 - Wednesday 10/22/2025

Cohort Kaulua participants in our October session gathered near the hau at Ka Papa Loʻi ʻo Kānewai.

Aloha mai kākou,

This October, our office is in the midst of our final offering of Cohort Kaulua (before we begin Cohort Waikolu next spring), and I always appreciate the opportunity to bring our participants to Kānewai, some of them visiting the loʻi for the first time. In the above picture, we learn about the importance of wai beneath the shaded roots and sprawling branches of the hau.

These hau plants are so massive that they have become a part of the landscape, often blending in with the foliage, but their presence signals more than just plant life. As we learn within the lines of “Welina Mānoa,” Kahaukani is a kiaʻi who protects Mānoa.

Anahulu Reflection:

Blended within the foliage of the landscapes within your life, where might you go to find shade?
