HonCC ʻOhana Gather to Celebrate Sustainability

Some participants reused take out containers for their lunch.
Students could get a reusable lunch container by completing an "event passport."
Some participants decided to weave their own lunch plates out of coconut leaves.
Everyone enjoyed live music while at Hoʻolauleʻa.
This yearʻs event encouraged everyone to have a green thumb!

The HonCC ʻOhana were encouraged to enter the annual Trash to Treasure Contest.
Some participants wore repurposed projects. One example was these soda tab earrings.
On a April 11, 2018 Honolulu Community College (HonCC) students, faculty, staff and administrators gathered along the mall and the campus mālafor its annual Hoʻolauleʻa.This annual event celebratedthe creation ofand harvest from Ka Māla o Niuhelewai (The Garden of Niuhelewai), as well as Native Hawaiian cultural traditions and sustainability.
This year's event featuredimu(earthen oven) prepared food; kuʻi ʻai(poi made by hand pounding kalo) and ʻuala(sweet potato) from the māla; music provided by HCC faculty, staff, students, and community musicians; interactive activities; information exhibits;and the collegeʻs repurpose/recycle/upcycle contest Trash to Treasure.
Kūlana Hawaiʻi:Hawaiian Programs Division, Career Services (Career Exploration), Student Life and Development, and the Sustainability Committeecollaborated to make this yearʻs event a reality.
Participants wereencouragedto practice sustainability by bringingtheir own reusable containers, utensils, and beverage flaskfor their lunch. One of the eventʻs goals wasto maintain mālama ʻāinaby eliminating the use of paper goods and Styrofoam products and alleviating the amount of trash produced. If participants did not bring containers they could construct plates by weaving launiu(coconut leaves) or ti leaves, or studentsreceiveda reusable lunch containerbought with student funds, after they completed an “event passport.”
The Sustainability Committe hosted its 4th Annual ‘Trash to Treasures’repurposing contest.
Each year theHonCC ʻOhana, including students, faculty, staff and administrators, are challenged to re-purposeematerial(s) usually thrown away into something with a practicalor artistic purpose.
This year there were twocompetition categories:Student Projectsand Faculty/Staff/Admin Projects. The competitionattracted more than 30 entries. More than 160people participated in voting for their favorite piece.
Student Project Winners
1st: Regienald Cacpal: Tire Tank – fish pond with component to circulate the water
2nd: Joshua Hazel: Chess Board
3rd: Aaron Sauvao: Diesel Parts Dogand Joseph Paul Akim: Murdercycle(tie)
These students will receive cash prizes funded by the Chancellor’s fund for student contests.
Faculty/Staff/Admin Project Winners
1st: Robert Silva: Newspaper Canoe
2nd: Bobby Salvatierra: Valentine’s Day Gifts
3rd: Suzette Kahana: Honolulu Fire Department Duffle Bag
These winners received prizes donated by the HonCC Bookstore.
