Workshop will help military veterans understand the judicial appeals process for claims

Military veterans, family members and advocates can learn more about the judicial appeals process for veterans claims from the perspective of a federal judge, as part of the latest workshop offered by the Elder Law Program at the William S. Richardson School of Law.

“A Conversation with Judge Coral Wong Pietsch” will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27. 

Pietsch, a Hawaiʻi resident who is working in Washington, D.C., was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) in 2012. She was the first woman to be promoted to the rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps and the first woman of Asian ancestry to be promoted to brigadier general in the Army.

The seminar is designed to help individuals navigate a process that has been called “veteran-friendly” but complex. Pietsch will give an overview of the CAVC, which has exclusive jurisdiction over decisions of the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. It is part of the U.S. Judiciary and not the Department of Veterans Affairs.

She will be introduced at the talk by her husband, Professor James H. Pietsch, director of the UH Elder Law Program and the Veterans Focus Clinic. He teaches Law, Aging and Medicine; Elder Law Clinic; and Health Law: Bioethics. He joined the UH law school after active duty service in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps and the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

Afternoon tea and refreshments will be provided in the Law School’s Moot Court Room at the ‘Ewa end of the central courtyard.
