University of Hawaii at Manoa Students Awarded Grants to Study in Asia
University of HawaiʻiFourteen University of Hawai'i at Mānoa students have been awarded Freeman Foundation Undergraduate Study Grants to Asia. The recipients and their study plans include:
§ David Doles of Honolulu will attend the Tagalog On Site program at the University of the Philippines-Los Banos.
§ Darcy Gibo of Honolulu will study language and culture at the University of the Ryukyus beginning October 2003.
§ Shawn Gray of Honolulu will participate in the Thai Rural Development Course during the 2003 summer session at Thammasat University Bangkok.
§ Amelia Hicks of Honolulu will attend a 12-week internship with Mlup Baitong in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
§ Scott E. Hovey of Honolulu will pursue language and culture studies at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
§ Michelle C. Isa of Kailua will study at the Center for Study Abroad Japanese Language and Society in Kobe, Japan.
§ Adrienne Lahtela of Honolulu will study Japanese language at Nanzan University.
§ Kitty Leelaamornvichet of Honolulu will study Chinese Language studies at a location to be determined.
§ Anthony Loiseleur of Honolulu will study language and culture at the University of the Ryukyus beginning in October of 2003.
§ Leilani Marquez of Honolulu will study Southeast Asian history and culture at the National University of Singapore or alternate institution to be determined.
§ Cesare Polenghi of Honolulu will study traditional music in Japan including gagaku, Gion Festival, geisha and Obon Festival in Mie Prefecture.
§ Justin Jiro Sakai of San Mateo, CA will study language and culture at Sophia University (Tokyo, Japan).
§ Lisa Tanikawa of Honolulu will study language and culture in Japan.
The awards are part of a four-year grant to the University of Hawai'i Asian Studies Program for the support of undergraduate education. They are open to Asian Studies majors and minors. The next competition will be announced in Fall 2003. The Freeman Foundation is a private foundation, which seeks to encourage greater knowledge and understanding between Asia and the U.S.
