University of Hawaii Hosts ED-MEDIA 2003

More than 1,200 educational researchers gathering in Waikiki to discuss new technologies

More than 1,200 educational researchers, teachers and others involved in educational multimedia, hypermedia and telecommunications from around the world will be gathering this week at the Sheraton Waikiki for the 15th Annual ED-MEDIA Conference.

According to David Lassner, University of Hawaiʻi Chief Information Officer and ED-MEDIA 2003 Program Co-Chair, "ED-MEDIA brings together thinkers and doers from 60 different countries to share their experience and ideas about how we can improve education through the use of new technologies. The most rewarding part of hosting this kind of conference in Hawaiʻi is providing our educational community with an affordable opportunity to interact in person with their peers from around the world."

The ED-MEDIA 2003 program includes eminent keynote and invited speakers, a range of in-depth tutorials, and a full program of over 800 refereed papers, panels and posters. ED-MEDIA‘s keynote speakers hail from all over the United States, Canada and Australia. They include Larry Cuban, Professor Emeritus of Education at Stanford University, who will reflect on his long experience in order to predict how classroom technology might evolve. Susanne Lajoie of McGill University, who is well known for her work on computers as cognitive tools, will continue the forward looking theme by discussing how emergent technologies might enhance learning and teaching. Uschi Felix of Monash University in Australia, an international authority on Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), will challenge conference participants into considering whether researchers and educators are lapsing into a set of mythical beliefs about the value of online education. Finally, Elizabeth Monk Daley of the University of Southern California‘s School of Cinema-Television is eminently qualified to explore the meaning of multimedia literacy.

To complement this excellent set of keynote speakers, ED-MEDIA has eight invited speakers from Australia, Austria, Canada, Hawaiʻi, Hong Kong and South Africa who will cover a wide range of topics. Invited speakers from Hawaiʻi include Kalena Silva and Keola Donaghy from UH Hilo, who will speak about Hawaiian Language Instruction on the Internet, and Dan Suthers of UH Mānoa, who will talk about Tools for Collaborative Learning.

ED-MEDIA 2003 begins with pre-conference tutorials and workshops that will be held through the end of today, with the full conference running Wednesday, June 25, through Saturday, June 28, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sheraton Waikiki.
