BikeUHM (pronounced “bike-um”), an inaugural event at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, invites students, faculty, and staff to ride their bicycles to campus on Wednesday, October 19, 2011.  The consortium of sponsors will host a two-hour fair on the Hamilton Library Plaza, adjacent to the newly installed bicycle racks, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Free mini-workshops in bike repair, maintenance, and security by Cycle Mānoa; a flat-tire clinic led by the “Red Hot Ladies” of the Hawaiʻi Bicycling League; a video demonstration of TheBus bike racks; and “Ask the Bike Doctor” will be available to current cyclists, as well as those considering commuting by bike. In addition, there will be light refreshments, giveaways such as clip-on flashing lights, and drawings for prizes of bike helmets and bike locks.

UH Mānoa received an Honorable Mention in the League of American Bicyclists’ list of Bicycle Friendly Universities and is the first Hawaiʻi State entity to implement sharrow markings (for lanes shared by both motorists and bicyclists) on its campus roads. Bike parking on the Mānoa campus is free in any of the more than fifty bicycle racks. Currently approximately 9% of UHM affiliates bike to school, with recent surveys indicating interest in this form of travel from a significant percentage of non-bicyclists.

The flagship campus of the University of Hawaiʻi system is a central employment and commuter destination on Oʻahu with a daytime population that often reaches 30,000 people. Recognizing that demand for access to the Mānoa campus contributes in part to the island’s traffic congestion and the quality of life of its residents, and that building more parking facilities is not financially feasible, the University seeks to encourage alternate modes of transportation besides the single-occupant vehicle. The mission of University of Hawaiʻi’s Parking Services is to maximize access to the Mānoa campus through a commitment to innovation, environmental sustainability, resource management, and quality customer service.

BikeUHM is sponsored by Cycle Mānoa; Hawaiʻi Bicycling League; City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services; and University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Bicycling Committee (Move with Aloha initiative), Parking Services, and Campus Security. Prizes donated by Hawaiʻi Bicycling League, Island Triathlon and Bike, and University of Hawaiʻi Bookstore.
