UH Manoa Chancellor Peter Englert has announced the appointment of Rolf-Peter Kudritzki to be Interim Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education. Kudritzki has been director of the Institute for Astronomy since October 2000, and will continue in that position.

UH oceanographer Edward Laws served for more than a year in the position, but recently informed Englert that he will return to his faculty position in the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology.

"We are grateful for Ed‘s time as interim vice chancellor," said Englert, "and I understand his desire to return to the faculty and his active research regimen. We have benefited from his institutional history at UH, and I look forward to his continued contributions to the university.

"I am confident that research and graduate education will be well-served under Dr. Kudritzki," Englert added. "He is an outstanding research scientist in his own right who will also bring a wealth of administrative experience to this senior management position. This will be important during the next several months as we continue to develop the permanent management team for Manoa."

The process for recruiting for permanent appointments not only for the research and graduate education position, but also for vice chancellor for academic affairs, is currently underway.
