Nearly 100 University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s janitorial and landscaping personnel are sporting new additions to their work uniforms—large buttons that say, “Aloha/Ask Me About UH Mānoa”—in a voluntary effort to assist new students and staff find their way around the 330-acre campus for the first two weeks of classes.

Janitors and groundskeepers who began wearing the “Ask Me” buttons on Monday report that newcomers and visitors to the campus are more readily asking directions or general questions, like the closest place to get some lunch.

Button-wearing personnel carry maps of the campus and reference sheets with pertinent information about UH Mānoa, because they consider themselves to be more than university employees, but also front-line ambassadors to the public. “Those who have chosen to participate in this voluntary program are enthusiastically taking part,” reports Roxanne Adams, UH Mānoa landscaping manager.
