HONOLULU — Kapiʻolani Community College‘s Junior American Culinary Federation (ACF) Competition Team, also known as Team Hawaiʻi, is the top student culinary team in the country, winning the student team national championship at the ACF National Convention in Orlando, Fla.

Team Hawaiʻi competed against teams from Michigan, North Carolina and Pennsylvania for the title. The team competition took place on Monday, July 13, and the results were announced at the ACF President‘s Grand Ball today. Team Hawaiʻi will return home on Thursday, July 16.

Under the guidance of Kapiʻolani CC Chef Instructors Frank Leake and Alan Tsuchiyama, Team Hawaiʻi is comprised of student chefs Anna Hirano, Keaka Lee, Tate Nakano-Edwards, San Shoppell (team captain), Rena Suzuki and Ken Yi. The team‘s journey began in October 2008 and they‘ve spent the months since together as a team, learning and refining advanced culinary skills in preparation for their competitions.

To earn its spot in the national competition, Team Hawaiʻi captured the top prize at the ACF‘s Student Team Western Regional Championship in April in Seattle, Wash. It was the first time a team from Kapiʻolani CC had captured the top prize in a regional ACF competition and the second time a UH community college team has won. Maui Community College captured the Western Regional Championship in 2000.
