A UH Mānoa program is taking part in United We Serve, a national effort launched by President Obama to engage more Americans in serving their communities this summer. The initiative focuses on four key areas: education, health, energy and the environment, and community renewal.

On Monday, June 22, UH Mānoa‘s Hawaii Pacific Islands Campus Compact/AmeriCorps*VISTA Project (HIPICC/AmeriCorps*VISTA) will kick off the nationwide initiative by selecting six new AmeriCorps*VISTA members to serve in Hawaii and throughout the Pacific.

On that same day, on the mainland, 18 high-level Obama administration officials, including the First Lady, will join volunteers as part of United We Serve‘s nationwide kickoff.

The coordinated effort—led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that improves lives and strengthens communities though volunteering and service—runs through September 11.

"In these tough economic times, we need volunteers more than ever," said Dawn Baxter, administrative project coordinator of the HIPICC/AmeriCorps*VISTA at UH Mānoa. "This project is facing increasing demands for services, and volunteers can help us fill this growing need. We are pleased to participate in United We Serve, and thank the President for making this call to service this summer and beyond."
