UH to celebrate World Town Planning Day on November 8

HONOLULU — On Wednesday, Nov. 8, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Department of Urban and Regional Planning will celebrate World Town Planning Day 2006 with various activities around campus.

The events include an informational booth on planning at Campus Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a colloquium entitled, "Homeless in Hawaiʻi: Shelter, Services, and Policy Options" at the School of Architecture Auditorium, Room 205. During the colloquium, graduate students will present the results of a study on homelessness in Waikiki. The first panel, to begin at 4 p.m., will feature well-known UH faculty reacting to the presentation including Neal Milner, Sumner LaCroix, Ron Matayoshi, Karen Umemoto and Dolores Foley. The second panel, beginning at 6:30 p.m., will involve various professional planners and service providers including Darlene Hein of the Waikiki Health Center, Keith Ishida of the City and County of Honolulu, Sandra Miyoshi of the State of Hawaiʻi, and Margot Schrire of the Institute for Human Services.

As part of the celebration, there will also be a reception at 5:30 p.m. and an awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m..

World Town Planning Day was started more than 40 years ago by Professor Carlos Maria della Paolera, University of Buenos Aires to advance public and professional interest in planning. It is now celebrated in more than 30 countries around the world.
