Syrmos named UH Manoa Associate Vice Chancellor for Research

UH Manoa engineering professor Vassilis Syrmos has been named Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education. He has been serving in the position on an interim basis since last year.

"I am pleased to announce that professor Syrmos has accepted the appointment on a permanent basis," said Vice Chancellor for Research Gary Ostrander. "He has a broad understanding of Manoa‘s research mission from his fifteen years at this campus, as well as hands-on work in cutting-edge technology at our excellent College of Engineering."

Manoa Chancellor Denise Konan said, "Our research enterprise is thriving, and we expect further growth in the future as our faculty researchers compete successfully for grants. Professor Syrmos‘ leadership in the Vice Chancellor‘s office adds new depth to our commitment to excellence."

Syrmos received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and came to UH Manoa‘s Department of Electrical Engineering in 1991. His research interests include geometric and algebraic approaches in linear system theory, computational algorithm methods for signal and image processing, filter design in systems, medical imaging, and related study.

He is the author/coauthor of more than 100 journal and conference papers and the book Optimal Control, 2nd edition, John Wiley, 1995. He was an Associate Editor of Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing. He has served in numerous international conferences in technical program committees, editorial boards and organizing committees. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Office of Naval Research, the Naval Air Systems Command, the Naval Sea Systems Command, The Boeing Company, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), and Hawaiian Electric Company.

Syrmos has served as a consultant to numerous companies. He is a Boeing A.D. Welliver Fellow, a member of the board of Hawaii Technology Development Venture program, a member of the Sigma Xi research organization, and a senior member of IEEE.
