The UH Laboratory School has announced details of a major welcome-back-to-school fundraising concert to assist in recovery from last month‘s fire that destroyed the Elementary School Building and displaced more than two-dozen faculty members.

The event is being staged under the billboard "HOLOMUA (Moving Ahead) BENEFIT CONCERT: A time for Recovery" and will feature top headliners from among Hawaiʻi‘s musicians — including HAPA, Na Leo, The Brothers Cazimero and many others.

Lab School alumni, students, parents, faculty and staff and the general public are invited to Andrews Amphitheatre on the UH Manoa campus for the concert on Saturday, August 19, beginning with pre-concert musicians and acts at 4:00 p.m. and headliners on stage from 6 -10 p.m.

The Lab School Administrative Team beams with gratitude and excitement when they talk about the extreme aloha the community has shared with the school. "Early on when people were calling to ask how they could help, we had a call from Barry Flanagan of HAPA about a fundraising concert, and from there the idea mushroomed into the event we‘re planning for August with an all-star roster of the islands‘ finest musicians. Barry is the angel who found a place in the hearts of the Lab School ʻohana! We are grateful for the support all the local entertainers have for our school and the students.

"It seems as though we are getting two or three calls every week from more people and groups who want to help, and we‘re sure we will have a lineup of ʻsurprise‘ guests to perform. The outpouring of support from our alumni and the general public has been simply amazing and very touching," the Administrative Team added.

The confirmed lineup of performers — who are donating their time and talent for the event — includes HAPA, Na Leo, The Brothers Cazimero, Danny Kaleikini, Andy Bumatai, and Maunalua.

"This is the weekend before the new school year starts," said UH Manoa Chancellor Denise Konan, "and I‘m sure the concert will be a real morale booster for our students and staff who have been involved in the recovery effort and who will be adjusting to the campus without the Elementary School Building."

All proceeds from the benefit concert will be used to recover losses that were housed in the building — including the school‘s Performing Arts Department (Chorus, Orchestra, Drama and Hula), the Physical Education Department and Weight Training Room, the UHS Jr. ʻBows Athletic Department (including Pac-5 team sports) and the Athletic Trainer‘s Office.

Tickets for the concert are $30 in advance and $40 at the door on the day of the event. They will be on sale on a first-come, first-served basis from 9:00 a.m. — 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, and Saturday, August 5, at the UH Lab School Multi-Purpose Building, 1776 University Avenue, directly across from Bachman Hall.
