This year‘s Earth Day celebration at UH Manoa picks up on Chancellor Denise Konan‘s declaration that 2006 is "The Year of the Student," and activities planned for the event will focus on empowering that sector of the campus community to make campus operations more "Earth-friendly."

Events will take place on Friday, April 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at UH Manoa‘s Hawaiʻi Hall on the lawn facing Varney Circle.

The goal of the Student Sustainability Forum (9:30-11:30 am), the highlight of the day, is to clarify, record and acknowledge students‘ visions of the ideal future for the campus. Open discussion groups will focus on three topics vital to campus operations: Energy, Recycling/Materials, and Food. Each session will begin with a brief overview of the topic, and a summary of the status quo at UHM. Students then will discuss their vision of the ideal campus vis-à-vis the topic, and formulate suggested actions for improvements. Those vision statements and solutions will be presented to Chancellor Konan at a ceremony at noon.

Other activities will include Malama ʻAina Work Projects (9:30-11:30 am) such as planting the grounds around Hawaii Hall following a landscaping plan initiated and developed by students, and an Eco-Fair (9:30 am-2:30 pm) with sustainability exhibits, food made with locally grown and organic ingredients, handmade crafts and other green products, and music by local bands.
