The University of Hawaiʻi-Hilo‘s Moʻokini Library, a participant in the Federal Depository Library Program, has transferred the majority of its federal government publications to UH Mānoa‘s Hamilton Library Government Documents Collection. The documents will replenish about 15 percent of the collection‘s 95 percent loss that resulted from the October 30, 2004 flood damage.

"Moʻokini Library‘s documents will fill in many gaps, particularly for scientific and technical literature and historical documents," said Gwen Sinclair, Head of the Government Documents & Maps Department at the UH Mānoa Library. "We are extremely grateful to UH Hilo for providing us with so many of their documents."

Moʻokini Library is one of hundreds of libraries and organizations throughout the United States that have provided the UH Mānoa Library with replacement copies of documents lost in the flood. Moʻokini Library will continue to maintain a current collection of federal government publications to serve both the UH Hilo community and the entire Big Island. Documents transferred to the UH Mānoa Library will be available to UH Hilo‘s patrons through interlibrary loan.

The UH Hilo Library was designated a Federal Depository Library in 1962. As a selective depository, the library receives a portion of the documents distributed to depository libraries by the Government Printing Office. The UH Mānoa Library, as one of 53 regional depository libraries in the nation, is required to maintain a comprehensive collection of government publications and to make them available to the public.
