HONOLULU — Hawaiʻi public high school seniors planning to further their education at any of the University of Hawaiʻi‘s 10 campuses this fall have the opportunity to receive assistance from a newly established scholarship program. The State of Hawaiʻi B Plus Scholarship, funded by the State Legislature and approved by the UH Board of Regents last year, will distribute at least $500,000 for the 2006-2007 academic year. The program was designed to increase access to higher education and provide the state with a more educated workforce. At the same time, the program intends to bridge the gap between the cost of UH tuition and the resources available to low-income families. The UH financial aid offices will distribute the awards to students. The statewide GEAR UP program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program) and the university's Office of Student Equity, Excellence, and Diversity (SEED) are working closely with the public schools to recruit applicants.Students wishing to apply for the 2006-2007 scholarship must meet the following criteria:
· Be a Hawaiʻi resident;
· Have financial need;
· Be graduating from a Hawaiʻi public high school this spring
· Have a minimum 3.0 GPA;
· and plan to enroll this fall at any of the 10 UH campuses.
