The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is among the top 2% in the world for academic and research excellence, according to the 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, released on August 15.

UH’s flagship campus ranked in the No. 90–110 tier in the U.S out of about 2,600 four-year colleges and universities. Out of more than 26,000 colleges and universities worldwide, UH Mānoa placed in the No. 301–400 tier.

Shanghai Ranking Consultancy considers more than 2,000 worldwide universities for its rankings and the best 1,000 are published.

ARWU utilizes the following criteria:

  • (20%): Staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
  • (20%): Highly cited researchers
  • (20%): Papers published in Nature and Science
  • (20%): Papers indexed in Science Citation index-expanded and Social Science Citation index
  • (10%): Alumni of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
  • (10%): Per capita academic performance of an institution

“These rankings once again affirm UH Mānoa’s international reputation as one of the world’s finest research universities,” UH Mānoa Provost Michael Bruno said. “Our extraordinary and continued success is testament to the quality of our faculty, staff, and students, and to the lasting impact of their work here in Hawaiʻi and well beyond.”

Global Ranking of Academic Subjects

Three UH Mānoa programs earned top 50 marks in the world in the latest Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, released on May 31. UH Mānoa is No. 15 in the world in atmospheric sciences, No. 16 in oceanography and No. 50 in hospitality and tourism management. Two other programs earned top 100 marks. A total of 15 programs were ranked.
