Sarah Simblet of Oxford University will be artist-in-residence, speaking, and conducting workshops sponsored by the Harold L. Lyon Arboretum at the University of Hawai`i Mānoa, Friends of Lyon Arboretum, and Punahou School.

Simblet is a fine artist and writer, whose work explores the relationship between science, history and art. She is the author of several books including the Anatomy for the Artist (2001), and Botany for the Artist (2010), and is co-author of The New Sylva: a Discourse of Forest and Orchard Trees for the Twenty-First Century (2014). Simblet is dedicated to sharing and encouraging visual intelligence in others through her drawings, teaching and broadcasting worldwide. Simblet is Director of Studies for Fine Art at Christ Church, Oxford and Tutor in Anatomy at the Ruskin School of Art at the University of Oxford. She teaches Short Courses at The Ruskin School, together with the Royal Academy of Arts, London and lectures at Universities and Botanic Gardens worldwide.

Simblet will give a public talk, "The Art of Drawing" with Sarah Simblet on Monday, January 13, 2020. The talk will be held at Luke Auditorium, Wo International Center, Punahou School from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. She will share her thoughtful insights about the practicalities, meaning and usefulness of drawing in all of our lives. Alongside a discussion of works by other artists, the talk will focus on a selection of her own work made for her publications in anatomy and botany. This visual talk will also include some of her new drawings made on O`ahu.

Several workshops will be offered at Lyon Arboretum. Participants will learn about observing and capturing the essence of the flora found at Lyon Arboretum. Sarah will do a live drawing demonstration and participants will follow her into the Arboretum for an outdoor drawing session*.

*Event activities/structure may vary depending on the weather. The session will be held in a classroom if weather does not permit drawing outdoors.

Two sessions will be offered on Friday, January 17th, 8:30 am – 11:30 am and at 1:00 – 4:00 pm, and one on Saturday, January 18th from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm.
