WHAT:  7-Eleven Hawai‘i is partnering with Kapi‘olani CC’s Culinary Arts and Culinology and Leeward CC’s Culinary Arts students to develop a better-for-you entrée that may potentially be sold at all 7-Eleven Hawaiʻi locations for a limited time in 2020.

WHO:  Eight Kapi‘olani Community College and Leeward Community College Culinary Arts student finalists are competing in the "On the Line” entrée competition

WHEN:  Wednesday, December 4, 2019

WHERE:  Kapi‘olani CC Culinary Innovation Center at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific 100 Lab, 4500 Diamond Head Road

OTHER FACTS:

  • Finalists must use at least two locally grown, caught or raised ingredients. The finished product must fit in a standard 7-Eleven Hawai‘i entrée container, can contain no more than 700 calories, must have at least three components (i.e. protein, vegetables, grains or pasta) and must not contain rice.

  • This competition supports the local agriculture industry and local culinary talent, and enables the students to apply their culinary knowledge and technical skills to develop a new food product.

  • If the winning recipe will be sold, it will be featured as a Localicious® dish in March 2020. Localicious® is an annual campaign spearheaded by the Hawaii Agricultural Foundation. Its mission is to raise funds to support culinary education in Hawaiʻi. Funds are raised through their partnerships with various local food establishments who designate one dish that has a local ingredient to be sold throughout the month of March 2020. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Hawaiʻi Agriculture Foundation.

Lauren Tamamoto, Kapiʻolani CC Culinary Arts Instructor and director of the Culinary Innovation Center (:09)

“Partnering up with these large companies gives students this opportunity to boost up their resume or say hey look at this I made this dish that millions of people can buy.”

Debbie Lee Soon, 7-Eleven Hawaiʻi senior category manager of fresh food (:10)

“We like that demographic with new ideas, they think out of the box, so things that we haven’t thought of and the culinary students have the skill to put it together.”

Kainoa Reloza, Kapiʻolani CC culinary student and first place winner  (:08)

“I just cook basic food you know, I didn’t think something as simple as what I made would actually be sold. It’s a little unreal.”
