For his decades of scientific research, Hixon was recognized as the most cited scientific author on coral-reef ecology in the United States in 2004.

Hixon is also an Aldo Leopold Fellow and Fulbright Senior Scholar and has served as chair of the Marine Protected Areas Federal Advisory Committee and the National Science Foundation Ocean Sciences Advisory Committee.
