On February 24, 2023, Dr. Maya Sypert (University of Hawai’i at Mānoa) and her longtime performance partner, pianist José Meléndez (Academy of Vocal Arts, Philadelphia) will present a recital of all Italian art song in February. The recital is co-presented by UHM and the Friends of Italy Society of Hawaii, with additional support from the Art Song Preservation Society of New York and Hawaiʻi Opera Theatre. The program features works by Cesti, Respighi, Santoliquido, Donizetti, Verdi, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Pizzetti, Donaudy, and Tosti; and poetry by Dante, Petrarca, D’Annunzio, Leopardi, Vittorelli, and more.
About the recital, Dr. Sypert says, “We are extremely excited to be able to return to our roots (some of the first songs we ever performed together) and bring this all-Italian program to Honolulu. We’ve curated a program that will have a few songs that audience members might recognize, and also (hopefully) a few things they’ve never heard before. There is some exceptional poetry featured on this program, and we are excited to present repertoire that really highlights the Italian language.”
