In Memoriam: Paul Barrett

In Department News, Faculty News by Thomas Osborne3 Comments

With deep sadness, the UH Music Department grieves the loss of Paul Barrett. Paul served as our applied bassoon faculty since 1978, teaching and inspiring generations of bassoon students. This is a profoundly sad day for all of his current and former students, the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra (where Paul had served as principal bassoonist for forty years), and the wider musical ‘ohana here in the Hawaiian Islands.

Paul was incredibly dedicated to his family; to his dogs; his friends; and to his students. We will miss his deep musicianship, his passion for his craft, and his big heart for all around him. Paul’s musical legacy will continue to live on through all of us fortunate enough to have studied and worked with him.

More about Paul Barrett can be found here.

  1. I’ve known Judy and Paul Barrett since my daughter Rachel was studying violin with Judy 15 years ago.
My heart goes out to Judy and family.
    All my love

  2. Such a caring, kind man with a sense of humor, enthusiasm for life, intelligence, talent and sincere humility. My deepest condolences to his family and the entire community. A heartbreaking loss for all.

  3. Paul was a friend and colleague at the Moyse conclaves in the 70s. A marvelous bassoonist and musician, he was a joy to hear and to play with
My best wishes to his family.

Steve Franse (Calgary Phil principal bassoonist)
