In Memoriam: Edward Shipwright

The Music Department of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa mourns the loss of Professor Emeritus Edward Shipwright. Dr. Edward Shipwright, 85, passed away on April 17, 2018 at St. Francis Hospice in Honolulu. He was born in Chicago.

Before his appointment to the piano faculty at the University of Hawai‘i in 1970, Edward Shipwright was a member of the upper division and preparatory department faculties of the Juilliard School in New York. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Juilliard. The title of his doctoral dissertation at Columbia University Teachers College is “The Late Piano Works of Franz Liszt”. Dr. Shipwright’s distinguished teachers included Alton Jones, Sascha Gorodnitzki, and Martin Canin.

His 30 years at UH enriched not only the lives of his students but the community who were fortunate to hear him play as well as the lives of all who knew him. His many students benefited from his mentorship, expertise and warm personality.

Dr. Shipwright gave 25 solo faculty recitals at the University of Hawai‘i, and in his retirement additional recitals at Mozart Music House in Honolulu.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
