Gagaku Moonviewing Concert

Hawaii Gagaku Society, under the direction of Reverend Masatoshi Shamoto, will present a concert to celebrate the full moon at the Barbara B. Smith Amphitheater.

Gagaku is the oldest living tradition of orchestral music in the world. This concert will include three performance styles: Kangen (music with wind and string instruments), Bugaku (court dances), and Kagura (dances of the gods).

The Hawaii Gagaku Society has performed at numerous events, including ceremonies at the Japanese Consulate of Hawaii; Moon Viewing Concerts at the University of Hawaii; the Honolulu Festival at the Hawaii Convention Center; Smithsonian Institute’s Festival of American Folk Life in Washington, D.C.; guest performances and lectures at the University of Cologne in Germany; and guest performances with the Japan Gagaku Society in Tokyo, Japan.

Tickets at the door: $12 general admission; $8 UH faculty/staff/students & seniors (65+). UHM music majors free.

Eligible for Mus 199 concert attendance credit.
