Bryce Nakaoka, hornist with the US Coast Guard Band, will discuss making a career in music (freelancing, auditions, etc.) on Thursday, October 2, 12:30pm in the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa’s Orvis Auditorium, 2411 Dole Street.
Musician 1st Class Bryce Nakaoka has served as hornist with the United States Coast Guard Band since 2010. Originally from O‘ahu, Nakaoka studied horn with Eric Kop and played with the Royal Hawaiian Band before departing for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he recorded four compact discs with the UNLV Wind Orchestra, performed in shows on the Las Vegas Strip (including The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King), and played with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, where he held the associate principal position during the 2007–2008 season.
The United States Coast Guard Band is the premier band representing the United States Coast Guard. The elite, 55-member ensemble has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the nation and toured throughout the world. Based at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, the Coast Guard Band frequently appears in Washington, DC, at presidential and cabinet level functions on formal and informal occasions.
