Jane Kerns

Lecturer in Music


Jane Kerns holds a BA in Theatre from Ohio State University and a BM and MM in Vocal Performance and an MA in Musicology from University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Her research has focused on women’s contributions to music and the musical theater genre. Ms. Kerns has performed in theatrical productions in New York and Hawai‘i, has sung with both Hawaiʻi’s symphony chorus and Hawaiʻi Opera Theatre, and has written music and theater criticism for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the American Musicological Society. Ms. Kerns has taught various vocal and music history courses for UHM’s music department, including a course she developed called “Curtain Up! Broadway Musicals, Then and Now.” She travels bi-annually to New York City to catch up on theater and enjoy the city’s music scene and its cultural diversity.
