Update: Spring 2020 Outbound Exchange Programs

Out of concern for the safety of students, faculty, and staff, the University of Hawaii, as of yesterday, announced that no new non-essential, university-sponsored, out-of-state travel be planned and that already scheduled travel should be cancelled. Regrettably, this means that all university-sponsored programs, including MIX programs, are no longer permitted to send students abroad at this time.

At present, many airlines have announced that they will be waiving change/cancellation fees and/or assisting with the rebooking of flights to and from impacted countries. The list of airlines offering these waivers is expected to grow. Thus, we strongly encourage that all affected students contact their airline(s) to request further information about their refund or flight-change policies.

In the coming week, we plan to work closely with the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA), the Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid Services, and other units on campus to ensure that you are offered the following:

  • An opportunity to defer your Spring 2020 MIX program to Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 (or a full refund of MIX application and administration fees if you are unable to defer);
  • A full refund of tuition paid towards the Manoa International Exchange placeholder course (IS-099) this Spring;
  • Assistance in submitting a Leave of Absence Application (if necessary) and a Drop Form for IS-099.

We also recommend that all students impacted by this decision strongly consider enrolling in courses at UH Manoa in Summer Term I and/or Summer Term II. If you encounter any difficulty registering for the classes you need this summer to stay on track, please contact our office as well as your Academic Advisor. We will do all that we can to assist you in getting into the classes you need. You will also likely be able to defer some or all of your financial aid and scholarships that you were expected to receive for Spring to put towards your Summer tuition. However, you must apply for summer financial aid to be eligible: https://www.hawaii.edu/fas/mymanagement/summer.php

We hope that you understand that this decision was not made lightly. It was made with the intention of protecting the health and safety of our community to the fullest extent possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at uhmix@hawaii.edu. We will do our best to answer any questions you have as soon as we can.
